Norseld was established in 1986 as a privately owned company principally to develop the Copper Bromide laser for medical applications. The first laser was sold in 1989 for the treatment of vascular lesions, including port wine stains. These outstanding results were obtained by exploiting the very specific wavelength of this laser. It transpired that the 578nm line from the laser corresponded with a peak in absorption in haemoglobin (the pigment in blood). Hence it was found to be possible to transfer energy through the skin without damage, yet be strongly absorbed by the blood in a vessel. This energy could raise the temperature of the vessel to about 80 degrees C in about 20 ms thus causing photocoagulation of the vessel. Subsequently natural scavengers remove the dead tissue.

Norseld has gained both CE marking and FDA marketing approval for the medical laser system which has been further developed to be highly successful in the treatment of a number of cutaneous lesions.

Norseld now markets the laser system world wide with over 200 units installed. More than 100 units are in Europe, 66 in Australia/Asia and 46 in US/Canada.

Norseld has always been very active in the development and refinement of our products. We currently spend in excess of $1M annually on research and development. We are well supported by the Australian Government by Research funding grants.
