Salt production has been a formal industry in the cabo frio region for nearly 200 years. The perynas salt company was founded in 1929 when miguel couto took over the salt facilities of his family and formally established a corporation. The 300 square kilometer surface area, and shallow depth of lake araruama coupled with year round high temperatures made the region ideal for producing salt using solar vaporization techniques.
