A family company with strong support
Atlantic Leather is a family business run by the couple Sigridur and Gunnsteinn Bjornsson. Sigga and Gunni, as they are nicknamed, have years of experience in the industry and are supported by a group of solid investors, including Iceland's New Business Venture Fund and Nordurstrond ehf.
Atlantic Leather specialises in the production of high-quality fishleather and a high level of service. The company was founded in 1994 as a spin-off company of Lodskinn, which produces tanned sheep skins and had made remarkable headway in tanning technology for fish skins since 1989. The foundation of Atlantic Leather marked the entrance of fishleather products into foreign markets, presented as premium materials for a wide variety of merchandise. With constant perseverance and faith in their project, the managers, staff and owners have succeeded in building up a strong enterprise which is constantly growing.
Location
Atlantic Leather is ideally located for fishleather production in the rural town of Saudarkrokur, a small but dynamic community on Iceland's north coast. Not far from rich fishing grounds, the location enjoys other natural resources such as geothermal hot water and renewable energy from a hydroelectric power station. Employment and education in the area are both of a high standard and, while it has fewer than 3,000 inhabitants, Saudarkrokur is the centre of commerce, education and culture in the Skagafjordur region.
