Teddy Exports

Teddy Exports is a successful small business, based near Madurai, Tamil Nadu, It was established by Amanda Murphy, from Northern Ireland, in 1990 in a mud hut with 5 employees. Currently the company has 300 employees and an annual turnover in excess of US$ 2.5 million.

Teddy Exports is certified ISO 9001:2000 as a Manufacturer of Textile and Wooden products. It is a member of IFAT, The international Fair Trade Association and was awarded the Worldaware Award Crown Agents' Foundation Award for Small Business in 1999. In the same year, for her contribution to the community, its founder, Amanda Murphy was awarded the M. B. E. By Queen Elizabeth II.
With a mix of British and Indian staff, the company designs and manufactures a wide range of wooden and textile products. Textile products range from cosmetic and shopping bags through to sarongs and cushions, using fabrics sourced throughout India. Wooden products range from massage rollers through Lifestyle products and garden furniture, using wood from sustainable and environment-friendly sources. The company plays a leadership role in applying good practice to the growing and harvesting of wood, and has established a model plantation, a saw mill and co-operative project with communities who live from and manage the plantations.

A focus on low cost waste products to generate profits has helped demonstrate in a real sense the concept of 'profit from waste'. An environment friendly attitude to all systems of manufacturing at Teddy Exports was adopted from day one.
