SIS Organo Chemicals is a small but very agile organisation which is committed to the production and marketing of P60 SUPER SOL, an aliphatic organic polymer used to substitute Phenol in the preparation of P.F.Resin used in the Laminate and Plywood industies.
P60 SUPER SOL is an alkaline, water-soluble and aliphatic natural resin containing polyhydroxyl groups. It is extracted from a natural polymer and is the composition of various types of organic compounds, chiefly Shellolic Acid and Jalaric Acid. It is not a single compound but consists of intimate mixture of several polar and non-polar components in a molecule. P60 Super Sol has been fractioned into two main components namely hard resin and soft resin.
The resinous character of P60 Super Sol is believed to be due to the association of the components through hydrogen bonding of both the resinous constituents of P60 Super Sol, soft resin and hard resin. Both constituents contain hydroxyl acids, and their polar groups are present at the inter-face of the molecule. It is presumed that the ability of P60 Super Sol to adhere strongly to smooth surfaces is the result of orientation of these polar groups.
Specific gravity of P60 Super Sol varies between 1.34 to 1.36. It has an average molecular weight 1006, acid value 65 - 75 and saponification value 220-230. P60 Super Sol is insoluble in glycerol, hydrocarbon solvents and esters but dissolves readily in alcohol, aqueous solution of alkalis, organic acids and ketones. This finding has led to the conclusion that hydroxyl, carboxyl and carbonyl groups are present in P60 Super Sol.
P60 Super Sol is a polyester type of resin consisting of inter and intra-esters of polyhydroxyl carboxylic acids formed from certain hydroxyl acids and sesquiterpene acids. It is believed to have five hydroxyl groups including vicinal hydroxyl group, one carboxyl group in free state, three ester groups, one double bond and one partly masked aldehyde group, and the probable linkages ester, acylal, acetal and ether in an average molecule.
From a study of the composition of P60 Super Sol, it is concluded that the chief building blocks of P60 Super Sol are Shellolic Acid and Jalaric Acid (a tri-cyclic sesquiterpene). The structure of Shellolic Acid and Jalaric Acid as an aldehydic acid has been established.
Uniquely processed Shellolic and Jalaric Acid polymers such as P60 Super Sol has been combined with the process of manufacturing phenolic resins to produce material for Decorative Laminates successfully and is being widely used in reputed factories in India to replace a substantial portion of phenol, 20 - 35% of phenol used in a batch. It is observed that in all likelihood, cross linking takes place under the influence of heat.
Lastly, work on this compound is still going on to further expand the knowledge base and it's possible uses, apart from the present usage as replacer of phenol.
