TIM (Telecom Italia Group) is the leading European operator in terms of GSM lines on a single network and leader in the domestic market with 26.1 million lines as of December 31, 2003. In the same period the TIM Group with its subsidiaries and associate companies in Europe, South America and the Mediterranean basin has reached an overall number of 44.5 million lines.
Listed on the Milan stock exchange on 17 July 1995, TIM ranks third in Italy in terms of market capitalisation. The stock's relevant position at international level is also testified by its introduction in the Eurostoxx50 (July 2001) and within the main European indices (FTSE and DJ Stoxx among the others).
In a highly competitive scenario and with a high level of penetration and rapidly evolving technology, the attention that TIM pays to innovation is confirmed by its leadership in the business of traditional voice services while making the company one of the major players in the development of the TLC sector. TIM has played a trail-blazing role in TLC. It has opened Italy up to the mass market and made it into one of the most advanced markets in Europe, first by introducing the Family tariff in 1993 and the prepaid card in 1996, while more recently it has introduced the revolutionary concept of AutoRicarca (self-recharging).
First in Italy (June 2002) TIM opened up the third generation era by introducing MMS into the country. MMS (Multimedia Messaging Services) enable TIM customers to send images and sound along with a text message. In this new scenario, the business model chosen by the Company for the interactive service supply and Internet site access (i-TIM) takes the form of an "open" type model based upon the integration of a number of technological platforms (UNITIM, SimToolkit, WAP and GPRS).
TIM also launched a mobile TV service on the domestic market, the first of its kind anywhere in the world bringing the small screen to the mobile phone thanks to the co-operation of 4 TV partners : La7, MTV, CFN/CNBC Financial Network, Coming Soon along with RAI three channels, this offer can be tested on an exclusive basis for one year.
The financial results confirm TIM's capacity to combine technology innovation with high profitability and financial solidity. The economies of scale, the ongoing search for the improvement of efficiency and processes make TIM S.p.A., with a gross operating profit of euro 5,035 million and a profitability (gross operating profit/revennues) at 53.2% (figures as of December 31, 2003) among the best in class within the sector.
The TIM Group is a player that competes at world level. The TIM brand is no longer just Italian, being recognised in Europe, the Mediterranean basin and in South America. At present the Group is operating in, Greece, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, and Chile.
Within Europe, TIM has been awarded UMTS licences in Italy as well as in Greece with Stet Hellas. In addition, TIM has built-up an alliance with Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile and Orange, creating one of the biggest mobile telephony communities in the world with a customer base of more than 170 million lines in 15 European countries.
