In 1923, Shizuoka tea manufacturing company worker Ginpei Kurita branched out and started his own privately managed business in Naka ward, Yokohama. Since its port opened in 1859, Yokohama has developed into the center of Japan's foreign trade. At the time, Yokohama's tea business was bustling, and tea was the second largest export item after silk. Mr. Kurita started his business knowing he was sure to succeed in that environment. Until now, Kurita-En has dealt with tea in many different ways. In Japan, there is a tea culture that has been continuously passed down since the beginning of the Heian Period around 1200 years ago. At that time, only people of certain classes had the privilege of drinking tea as medicine, but now it has become widespread as an enjoyable drink. Kurita-En is a wholesale tea store that has been pursuing both traditional and innovative tea making since its establishment 90 years ago. Our products include a variety of sencha green teas from all over Japan, such as Shizuoka tea, Uji tea, Yame tea, Kagoshima tea, and Miyazaki tea. We also carry Uji matcha and matcha from Nishio City in Aichi, and everything from authentic matcha green tea for tea ceremonies to tea used to make sweets and ice cream.
