Chickenhawk was formed in mid-2008 by long-time model aircraft enthusiast Dave Thompson. Coming from an aviation and aeromodelling mad family, Dave grew up with the sound of motors and the smell of dope (the liquid kind) , which explains his partial hearing loss and relaxed demeanour! The Thompson clan were a familiar sight competing at the various local and national model rallies from the 70's until well into the 90's, building and flying everything from Control-Line team-racing, combat and speed, to Free Flight, chuck gliders and slope-soarers to RC fixed-wing sport, Pylon, Pattern and, last but not least, helicopters. After a decade-long stint engineering with Air New Zealand, Dave gave aviation a break for a while before giving in to his yearning to be 'back in the air' and returning to the aeromodelling scene.
While the models and (some) people may have changed over time, the passion to fly is the same. Advances in manufacturing methods and electric power, coupled with a considerable drop in costs associated with the hobby, means that more people can afford to indulge their quest to fly, safe in the knowledge that if they 'land' that little bit too hard, spare parts, expertise and assistance are just an email or phone call away.
Dave stood back and took in this 'new' modelling landscape, deciding that with the advent of the Internet, online auction sites and the high-quality, reasonably-priced hardware available, there was a need for a locally-based company and web-site dealing with all things aeromodelling. We didn't want just another 'sales' site-heaven knows there are plenty of those around-but a portal where modellers (and prospective modellers) can go to both give and get advice, as well as have access to a range of useful, sensibly-priced tools, models and materials. While there are such sites about, none have that uniquely 'Kiwi' flavour so we decided it was about time we built something ourselves. Check out our new forum here and please join up; it is free and quick and easy. Over the years you have experienced things other people haven't and know modelling 'secrets' others don't, so please use our forum to share that wisdom and help others into this great hobby of ours.
We don't just buy any old stuff in order to pad out the site and make a profit; we spend a lot of time (too much probably) searching for suppliers and products that we consider the best value for money; by doing it this way we have made Chickenhawk RC Products synonymous with value and experience. Many other sites are purely sales oriented; the people behind them importers and distributors interested in only one thing; moving product. Our entire site, product range and services offered are designed and implemented by modellers, for modellers and our sole mission is to help get you into the air with the minimum of fuss and the best chance of success-measured by your pride and joy not being turned into dumpster food first time out. While sales is obviously a part of our business, our focus is not on profit but on passing on our experience and giving assistance. We believe this makes a difference and we hope you do too.
While many of today's 'models' are no more than toys to the more hard-core modellers among us, we recognise that many aeromodellers get the 'bug' from toys like these before moving on to their bigger and more complicated cousins. Because of this we have a 'toys' page where you can find neat micro models and similar items, which make ideal gifts for the kids (big or small! ) in your life. Our main focus, however, remains toward the more serious pilot, that discerning breed who are only happy when they are squinting into the sun and well in control of their favourite model aircraft.
Thank you for your interest in my company.
