Intertrading limited was incorporated in 1987. In 1998 it was converted into a holding company and, with a newly adopted memorandum and articles of association, listed on the johannesburg stock exchange on 30 july, becoming the first fruit exporter to do so.
The foundation for the companys business was laid in 1985 when bert de kovel and ernest blomkamp established interfruit to offer south African growers access to the lucrative European markets. Later in the same year alfred hahn, who had been trading for a decade as the gallus trust co. (proprietary) limited, joined forces with them.
Initially involved in the challenging and highly competitive subtropical industry and latterly becoming involved in the recently deregulated areas of deciduous and citrus fruit, intertrading has since its inception been an important force in the south African fruit export industry.
The group now comprises several companies providing services in the agricultural sector, including both marketing and technical expertise to its clients, the major fruit producers and packaging operations in south Africa. Local operations extend throughouth south Africa, with intertrading procurement offices serving communities of growers from levubu in the North to cape town in the south.
Marketing is handled by a specialist team in rosebank and is responsible for exports to Europe and other markets, including Japan, Singapore, Hong kong, the United Arab Emirates, saudi arabia, Canada and the USA.
The group has minority interests in a macadamia and a mango farm, in a macadamia processing plant in schagen, mpumalanga, and in a fruit pack-house in kirkwood near port elizabeth.
Intertrading specialises in the procurement and international marketing of a variety of southern African fruits and other commodities from a range of climatic areas. Its procurement operations spread from cape town to zimbabwe.
Intertradings business is, essentially, to provide a service. Our team of specialist advisers and area managers maintain a close relationship with growers, advising them on technical matters, marketing and sales trends. It assists growers in negotiating favourable transport and shipping terms, and organises the movement of their products, ensuring quality preservation. Intertrading provides growers with bridging finance and aims to achieve the best possible prices for them. This creates a solid foundation of loyal growers that is vital to the success of intertrading.
Our marketing office works closely with supermarket chains and select importers in Europe and with growers in south Africa. This ensures the swift and uninterrupted flow of product to the marketplace, making intertrading a preferred supplier.
The company is active in several climatic zones and it is therefore not badly exposed to the risks of weather extremes or disease that may have an adverse impact on crops in particular areas in the course of the season.
Intertradings income is derived mostly from sales in foreign currency, making it a company with a powerful rand hedge characteristic.
