NatureWise Biotech & Medicals Corporation (NBM) was founded in the year 2000 by Dr. C Y Huang to develop new drugs from natural sources such as Traditional Chinese medicine and herbal extracts. NBM focuses on diseases that have had no effective treatment and has developed two naturally derived therapies: HDAC inhibitors and propolins. HDAC inhibitors are a type of cutting edge anti-cancer target therapy drug. Propolins are effective for treating neurodegenerative diseases. NBM has also tested some new products in agricultural biotechnology and invented a method to raise extra-large queen bees.
Strategies to Minimize Risk in New Drug Development:
1. Using low cost methods to screen active compounds
Instead of using a costly high throughput method to screen compounds from compound libraries to look for bioactive drugs, NBM sought out compounds from nature where new compounds or precursors of patentable compounds can be found.
2. Selecting projects with the highest possibility of success
We know our strengths and weaknesses and therefore projects are carefully screened and selected. We change directions quickly once the experiments fail to meet expectations.
3. Seeking governmental subsidies to reduce the cost
NBM has set up research laboratories in incubation centers sponsored by the government to take advantage of public facilities and governmental subsidies. We also apply for governmental funding for our R&D projects.
4. Collaborating with institutions and outsourcing some of laboratory work
We collaborate with domestic and foreign institutions to expedite R&D. We also outsource some of our laboratory work to GLP (Good Laboratory Practice)-certified laboratories for high quality tests.
Out-licensing R&D results- We may out-license our R&D results once they reach a milestone.
5. Developing and marketing dietary supplements to supplement income
We have developed and marketed a number of unique dietary supplements. The income generated from the sales of these products can help mitigate the cost of R&D. Benefits of these products can be used as supplementary data in future botanical drug registration.
