We design and build special purpose machines for various industries. Typically, our enquiries come from Pharmaceutical, Medtech, Electronics, Industrial and other technology driven areas. We also do some unusual things like the gold Chronophage clock currently on display at the Science Museum. The first Chronophage is on permanent display outside Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. We are normally approached with a specific need / problem, which requires a solution. The solution might take the form of an automated assembly machine, which assembles multiple components; a test machine for measuring specific parameters on a client product; automated process machines or helping the client to develop a new product.
Generally our systems are one offs but they do not normally have the luxury of being regarded as prototypes. Our machines are often mission critical to the client and can be required to operate 24/7. Our solutions enable our customers to increase productivity, maintain consistent quality, generate quality data and quite often help them gain a competitive advantage.
The variety of equipment developed and built by Huxley Bertram includes high pressure mud viscometers for the oil drilling industry, computer controlled hydraulic presses for metal forming research, microfludics sampler, powered wheelchair for children, HGV tachographs, domestic appliance controls and a world leading research tablet press. The brand qualities we aim to bring to every enquiry / project are simplicity, appropriateness and the aesthetic.
The company, which is based in Cottenham, near Cambridge is owned by the two directors, William Bertram and Stewart Huxley, both Cambridge University Engineering graduates, who started the company in 1979. Huxley Bertram have machines operating in Europe, North and South America and Asia. Projects, where appropriate, are kicked off with a brainstorming session usually with the client. We are not afraid to challenge the client request / specification and so arrive at the best solution together. The sifted ideas are weighed up against the contraints of time, budget and technological availability. Where possible and if desirable the solution will comprise off the shelf components so that we do not fall in to the design trap of re-inventing the wheel. The network of component suppliers we deal with be it for servo motors, bearings, control gear etc are world class in their own right and bring to bear their own innovation. So we adopt an open innovation approach to reach the design concept. Wherever possible, risks are addressed upfront with simple tests so bringing confidence to the concept or immediately highlighting concerns needing to be solved. As part of the design process our engineers will review concepts with peers and client and conduct a Failure Modes and Effect Analysis thereby flushing out the gotchas as soon as possible. Once the machine is built it undergoes extensive testing thereby minimising the need to go to site and debug so driving profitability for us and the client. If appropriate we implement remote monitoring on to our machines thus improving response time to diagnose faults and saving travel time to site. It also means that if we need to go to site it is likely that we have a solution prepared ready to implement thus saving downtime.
