Dry Corp's mission used to be saving summer. Now it's changing lives.
For the past decade, the Wilmington company has been churning out an ingeniously simple product that allows kids in casts to go into the pool or ocean.
Swimmers stretch the company's Dry Pro latex sleeves over their wounded arms or legs and suck out the air with the kind of pump used for blood-pressure tests.
The ensuing vacuum creates a seal so strong the sleeve can't be tugged off, water can't get it, and the user can do what he or she wants.
Over time, a broader potential has emerged for the product, which can be modified to help people like amputees who need to protect their prosthetics or chemo patients who risk serious illness if they get their catheter lines wet while bathing.
Dry Corp also takes on another group, using the vacuum technology to market a belt and pouch for people with ostomies, external bags that collect the body's waste.
