When I started KimsCrafts at my kitchen table fifteen years ago, I asked myself, what does the customer want? After pondering this for awhile, I decided the customer wanted the same things I did: beauty, durability and affordability, backed by a complete satisfaction guarantee.

Red Hat Slates! Well I must have hit it right, because since then we have grown from a one-woman, one-table operation to a leading producer of premium quality, hand-crafted decorative slates and calendars. As our staff and our range of products has expanded, our goal has remained the same to create outstanding, affordable works of art that will bring our customers pleasure for years to come.

We start by using such durable materials as fine-grained slate, hand-selected white pine and cabinet-grade birch plywood. Many of our slates are old roofing tiles, recycled from historic Maine churches and homes. Once these natural canvases have been individually cut and shaped, our eighteen home-based craftspeople go to work, applying as many as ten layers of paint through specially hand-cut stencils to achieve our unusually detailed designs. Many of our craftsmen are at-home moms. All take tremendous pride in their work, arranging their hours as necessary to produce the meticulously crafted products you see in these pages. While their individual personalities produce subtle, unique variations in shading and color, all meet our exacting standards of clarity and crispness.

After our eagle-eyed quality assurance personnel have checked the finished work we apply a double coat of weather-resistant sealer and prepare the piece for hanging. Each item is then carefully wrapped and boxed to protect it on its way to you. We can ship to any part of the country, and will gladly enclose a gift card upon request.

Our products are fabricated entirely in the U.S.A., using only U.S.-made materials. Though we have many imitators, we think you will be hard-pressed to find the same combination of beauty, value and functionality anywhere else.
