Consumer electronics market faces decline
The german market for consumer electronics declined by nearly 15% in current value terms and by just over 1% in volume terms over the review period. Factors responsible for the decline include fierce price competition, the high penetration of consumer electronic products in Germany and generally low consumer confidence.
Video volumes outperform audio
Video products volumes fared considerably better than those of audio products over the review period, increasing more than 5% over the review period. This stood in stark contrast to the near 18% volume loss suffered by audio products over the same period. This volume success for video products is due to dynamic growth in newer digital technologies such as DVD player/recorders and digital cameras. Video volume sales were also supported by falling prices of these newer technologies, particularly DVD players. However, these falling prices contributed to current value losses for video products of 16%.
Technological changes
Some important technological changes occurred during the review period, resulting in an enormous leap in sales since 1998. These included the emergence of new products such as digital cameras, in-home theatre products, MP3 players and DVD players and recorders. Digital formats are rapidly replacing analogue formats, with two key examples being DVD players substituting vcrs, and digital camcorders replacing analogue versions.
MP3 players have started to take over from cassette decks and portable cassette players. Sales of MP3 players increased strongly over the review period, and are expected to grow further throughout the forecast period. Similarly, in-home theatre products demonstrated a strong performance, becoming an increasingly popular complement to existing television sets, being found in an increasing number of german homes.
Multiple specialists dominate retail market
Multiple specialists accounted for 62.4% of value sales of consumer electronics in 2003, followed by specialist independents with a 22.1% share. Multiple specialists are dominated by the metro group's subsidiaries media markt and saturn, which run aggressive advertising campaigns focused on pricing.
The future looks brighter
The market for consumer electronics is expected to grow in the forecast period. New product developments will spur demand and have a positive effect on general trends. Digital televisions are expected to grow more dramatically in coming years, with MP3 players and in-home theatre systems expected to continue performing well. Cassette decks, minidisc players and vcrs are expected to be negligible by 2008, however, as they are replaced by superior technologies.
