Traditionally, each country has a national telecom service provider which previously held a monopoly. In the past few years, most countries in the Asia Pacific region have liberalized their telecom regulations, granting licenses to a number of private telecom service providers in order to create competition within the industry and choice of services for consumers. As a result of such deregulation in the telecom industry, new telecom service providers are building new infrastructure while existing national telecom service providers are upgrading their existing infrastructure in order to compete in the liberalized environment.

The emergence of the Internet also generates increasing demand in data networking which IKom has been able to capitalize on. The convergence of voice and data allows IKom to address bigger opportunities leveraging on data expertise that IKom has built up historically.
