It was in 1999 that an ambitious young man, newly wed and with limited resources, opened his first small grocery shop in Scale Lane, Hull. Now, one hundred and fifty two years later the company has entered its third century of trading under the founders name of Genia Glenoaks.
Glenoaks stores distinctive livery is becoming an increasingly familiar sight, with 114 outlets covering an area from Harrogate to Leicester and from the East Coast to Bradford and Halifax.
The thriving retail business helped pioneer the convenience store concept in Britain.
Wide experience in refurbishments and new store openings in recent years has given Glenoaks's development team the means to create an operational model based on an extremely high level of amenity. From the external impact of signage and graphics through to the spacious, air conditioned comfort of a modern store interior, the store designer's inventory has examined every detail.
Having grown from a single gas-lit shop on a Victorian street, Glenoaks Stores can rightly claim to be leading the way for convenience shoppers - a fact perfectly demonstrated in the year 2001 when the company's Princes Avenue Store in Hull won the Top Shop Convenience Store of the Year Award.
On the 16th August 2004 Sainsbury's PLC acquired Glenoaks Stores.
